“Hey Look at Me, LA, Here I Am!”
Whew… Who knew that being a pseudo-grown-up could be so tiring?! The last two days (and first two at my internship) have been so incredibly exhausting. But life is so good and I have so much to share.
A Touch of Post-Cannes Depression
As was predicted by myself and others, coming home from Cannes was a bit underwhelming. Ok, it was a lot underwhelming. And not because I didn’t want to see my friends and family because I certainly did. It was just hard going from the fast-paced lifestyle I had become accustomed to and transitioning into a much slower life at home. Luckily, I have wonderful friends and family who I was able to visit and spend time with while I was home. The 4 episodes of “Glee” on the TiVo didn’t hurt, either :)
Heads Carolina, Tails CALIFORNIA
Before I even had time to settle at home in Georgia, it was time to set off for my next adventure: Los Angeles. I was greeted by two of my very best friends at LAX: Dennis and Dena. Dena and I are living together at her uncle’s place in Pasadena — she’s interning at the mayor of LA’s press office. Dennis was just traveling through on his way to a fabulous summer in Ohio, then NYC, then London, Morocco, and Spain. Wow!
It turns out that the weekend I arrived and the weekend Dennis was in town was LA Pride. West Hollywood was hopping all weekend with all different sorts of festivities, and our little threesome hit the town Friday and Saturday night. As always when Dennis and I team up, it was an absolute blast. I wish we would have had our third partner in crime with us, Mr. Jeff Shannon, but I’ll be seeing him in Colorado in a few short weeks to make some memories of our own.
Other highlights of my first weekend in LA include: watching Dennis shake as he purchased his first pair of designer jeans; eating at The Ivy restaurant in Beverly Hills; meeting up with my study abroad amiga Rachel Deel and hitting Santa Monica and Pasadena with her and Dennis; having a fabulous lunch in Beverly Hills with Dennis and grabbing a WONDERFUL cupcake at Sprinkles; trying IN-N-OUT Burger for the first time; and jamming and dancing excessively in the car while driving through LA like we own the city.
The summer is off to a great start.
Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now
Settling in at my internship makes me feel like a grown up… almost. Above all, it feels right. It’s where I’m suppose to be.
For those who don’t know, I’m interning with a production company in Beverly Hills called Double Feature Films. Y’all, this place is WAY more legit that I thought. I guess shame on me for not doing enough research, right? Now, before I go into too much detail, I have to tell you that I’m not allowed to share everything that I see or hear in the office. I signed a confidentiality agreement that states that I won’t share secrets that could hurt the company. With that said, here me go…
As a summer intern at DFF, I am there to do whatever is needed around the office. Read scripts and cover (write summaries) of them; run errands around LA; organize the office, make coffee, answer phones, etc. And all the while I get to learn and watch what everyone else is doing and get an idea of how the industry works. Easy enough, right? Guys, I was scared out of my mind! I felt that I would surely mess up and get yelled at or that something would go terribly wrong. Now that I’ve had a couple days to adjust and get use to things, everything is fine. Everything is great, really!
Exciting things to note about my first few days: I read the scripts for two upcoming projects that DFF is doing, one starring Miley Cyrus and Demi Moore and the other starring Kate Winslet, Matt Damon, and Jude Law; I got to sift through production notebooks and check out schedules, budgets, cast lists, etc. (It was so cool! I even checked out what Miley gets paid…); I drove the director of one of the films in production to the Four Seasons for a meeting with Demi Moore (no big deal); I worked the phones and didn’t mess everything up — high point; I read a new script and wrote coverage on it; and I ran some more random errands around LA and learned how things work in the office. I am at DFF from 10 am to 7 pm, five days a week, and with an hour commute each way it makes for long days!
Today ended on such a high note because I got a little bit of a promotion in the office :) Instead of being what I would call a “random intern,” I’m now assigned to be an assistant to one of the executives in the office, Taylor. That means that I take her calls, reach her in the car with calls when she’s out of the office, take care of her call log, manage her calendar, confirm her appointments, do any errands she has in LA, shadow her in meetings if needed, look up information she needs, etc. With this promotion, I get my own little desk with a Mac computer and office phone. It’s the small things in life, isn’t it? I will still be reading scripts and helping everyone else out, but I feel so much better having an official spot in the office.
I’m really, really excited. I’m excited about being Taylor’s shadow. I’m excited about the projects that DFF is working on. I’m excited about getting to know everyone in the office. I’m excited about discovering LA. I’m excited about the next two months.
Living my dream,
Blake
